Hey Scholars,

Let's make a virtual campfire here in the icy flow of education.  We had an interesting presentation yesterday, and I'm wondering what you learned.  When we did the walking meditation I became very aware of how many parts of my body are generally in motion at once.  It was hard for me just to clasp my hands in front or behind and leave them in that position.  When I walk my feet seem to roll across the ground in a heel-to-toe motion, but I'm not very in touch with the balance of my own body.  Suddenly I seemed unsteady on my own feet.  Why is that?  What did you experience?

a socratic dialogue on religion!!!

Hey all of you fabulous scholars. The eight of you who are currently contributing to this blog all have comments and questions which relate directly or indirectly to a very interesting conversation that Socrates had prior to his trial for religious heresy. Let's read this dialogue between Socrates and Euthyphro, as it was transcribed by Plato, and talk about how things have or haven't changed with regard to RELIGION in the 21st century. OK? (We can also discuss what the FORM of the dialogue is supposed to do. You'll need to ask a bunch of questions, I hope. That's always Socrates' intention.) I'm going to send each one of you a copy of the dialogue so that you can read and annotate before our teach-in on April 30. If each of you bring 1 friend we could 16 students at the teach-in, and that would be a BLAST. Can you imagine 16 people thoughtfully discussing the role of religion in society??? C'mon. It'll be fun.

religion and philosophy

Philosophy is a logical method--a form of rigorous thinking which can be applied to any subject, including religion, if one wishes.

Would you all be willing to start by reading an encyclopedia entry about perhaps the most influential philosopher in Western tradition, Socrates? Socrates didn't write anything. He taught. If we want to, we could read some of the dialogues his student Plato transcribed. Anyway, Socrates' death is quite interesting, and pertains to the subject of religion, as he was executed for heresy. He was accused of atheism, although he denied the charge. He accepted his sentence willingly, even though his friends offered to help him escape. Hey Scholars. Last year during our planning session you came to the unanimous decision that you wanted our last teach-in of 2009 to be on the subject of "religion." What is it about religion that you wish to study and discuss? Our blog is OPEN to Seminar members only, so feel free to write, knowing that this space is school-sponsored, and not open to the general public. (If you have a friend who wishes to join the conversation she or he must first join the Seminar.)
